About Dr Mahoney

A Lifetime in the Law

Dr Joan Mahoney is one of the most distinguished legal scholars of her generation. Born in New York City in 1943, she studied history at the University of Chicago — where she was an active participant in the civil rights movement — before earning her JD magna cum laude from Wayne State University and a PhD in Legal History from Cambridge.

A trailblazer in American legal education — the first woman to serve as law school dean in the state of Michigan, and one of very few women to have held the deanship at two different institutions. — Wayne State University Law School

She served as Dean at Western New England College School of Law (1994–96) and Wayne State University Law School (1998–2003), leading the school's most successful capital campaign — raising over $19 million — and overseeing construction of a new state-of-the-art building.

After her distinguished American career, she joined the University of Southampton, teaching Legal History, Public Law, and Family Law. She has published widely in leading journals and with Oxford University Press. Now she brings all of that expertise into focused, one-to-one tutoring sessions.
